De schilder Bernardo Strozzi leefde op jonge leeftijd als kapucijner monnik in het klooster in Genua, Italië. Nadat Rubens in 1607 in Genua had verbleven, veranderde Strozzi's stijl zichtbaar. Nadat hij uit het klooster trad startte hij een succesvolle carrière als schilder en trok hij naar Venetië. Het rijke kleur- en verfgebruik van de Venetiaanse schilderkunst liet ook in Strozzi's werk zijn sporen na.
