The Asahi Shimbun

The Asahi Shimbun has been one of Japan’s leading newspaper publishers since its first issue was published in 1879. As an independent news organ, our mission is to contribute to lasting peace and to the continuing development of democratic ideals. Another of our important roles is to fulfill our social responsibilities by promoting arts, culture, sports, academic and scientific achievements.

Every year we organize and sponsor numerous exhibitions, often in collaboration with institutions abroad.  By introducing artworks and artists from Japan and abroad, we aim to contribute to developing mutual understanding and enriching lives of people.

Why Boijmans

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is one of the best museums in the world.  As we, at the Asahi Shimbun, engage ourselves with the organization of art exhibitions in Japan, we deem it important to associate and keep good relationship with Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and its partners.

Favorite pieces of art in the Boijmans Collection

We were privileged to collaborate with the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in organizing a blockbuster exhibition in Japan in 2017.  Those two works were among the masterpieces in that exhibition.

Jheronimus Bosch, De marskramer (The Peddler), circa 1500

Pieter Bruegel (I), De toren van Babel (The Tower of Babel), circa 1568
