Van Dongen made his debut as a painter in Paris with a solo exhibition at Galerie Vollard. The show included two new series of views of Paris from Montmartre. Van Dongen wrote to a Dutch journalist: ‘It is a great success […] but I am so ambitious that I would very much like your cooperation in appreciating my success.’ , In 1906 Kees van Dongen exhibits a selection of his work in Rotterdam. He shows ten drawings and more than seventy paintings, including this view of Montmartre. His work, which is subsequently shown in Zwolle, too, is remarkably well-received by the Dutch press, yet he only sells three works in all. This one is bought by Henriëtte Reuchlin-Lucardie, who gives it to Museum Boymans in 1936.
