  • Majdi asked

Hello, I do not have a question. I just wanted to direct your attention to a small mistake in the “de stijl in Rotterdam” slide. There is a typo in “can” which is written “van”. I hope this helps.

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Thank you Majdi, I will immediately correct the typo. Kind regards, Els

  • Andrew Icely asked

How can you tell a originally mondrian thank you

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Dear Andrew, this is a very difficult question. To find out if a painting is originally painted by Mondrian you have to have studied his oeuvre, his development and the way he used his materials and his brushes. To be completely sure you need a pedigree, which means that you need to be able to track down the painting's history of owners back to the artist's studio. Art-historians also use sources as exhibition catalogues and descriptions in contemporary magazines and newspaper articles. It is almost impossible that a work by Mondrian is discovered out of the blue. There are always historical connections and traces. I hope this answer is helpful. Best, Els.

  • Andrew Icely asked

What did he paint on was it canvass paper or card or was it all three

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Dear Andrew, this painting is executed in oil on canvas. There are also works by Mondrian on paper (drawings) and a few early oil sketches on cardboard. If you want to know exactly, work by work, you can find all information in the catalogue raisonne by Joop M. Joosten. Also the website of the RKD in The Hague offers substantial information about Mondrian, e.g. his letters. Good luck with your research! Els

More information

Mondriaan began as a painter of landscapes in muted tones. His mature style comprised compositions of black horizontal and vertical lines and blocks of white, grey and the primary colours: red, yellow and blue. The absolute harmony he sought reached beyond art alone. He wrote: 'Art is only a substitute as long as the beauty of life is deficient. It will disappear in proportion as life gains an equilibrium.'
