Ask anything

  • višnja asked

    Dear Sir/Madame,
Is the portret of Maria Josepha of Saxony by Frédo painted with prussian blue?

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Dear visitor, I have asked our curator of old masters, but unfortunately this painting has not been analyzed to this level, so we do not know (yet). I'm sorry that I cannot help you. Kind regards, Els

  • priyanshu asked

    When was Louis 16 Death

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Hi Priyanshu, Louis XVI was born in Versailles on the 23rd of August in 1754 and died on the 21st of January in 1793. He didn't die so peacefully; he was guillotined in front of an angry mob on the Place de la Révolution in Paris. Kind regards, Tanja

More information

We do not known if the Maria Josepha of Saxony posed for Frédou personally because the master usually employed an existing portrait as a model. He made several copies of a portrait of her husband by Maurice-Quentin de La Tour, and so he may have followed the same practice here.
