Koekkoek was the most esteemed Dutch landscape painter of his generation. This summer landscape is accompanied by a winter landscape, also in the museum’s collection. Koekkoek painted many such pairs, but these two are unusual in that this summer landscape was painted two years before the winter landscape. Usually such pendants were painted in quick succession.
