In earlier centuries children were depicted as miniature adults, but this changed in the 19th century. One of the first artists to depict children as children was the German painter Philip Otto Runge (1777 1810). Like Runge, Pieneman shows this boy as a playful child. Despite the boy's formal dress and stylised pose, Pieneman seems to have attempted to capture the boy's lively character in this portrait.
