Dael was a traditional Parisian painter of flower and fruit who for once in his life made something totally different. He probably did so for his amusement, because it is a picture of his own house. In retrospect that loving record of such an everyday subject turns out to be a masterpiece, with Dael seemingly seeking out his artistic limits and surpassing them.
