Jacob Maris is famed for views of Dutch towns under leaden skies. However, that only came after he had worked for years in Paris, the centre of modern art at the time. Maris knew the work of his French contemporaries, as shown by this view of a small town near Fontainebleau. A finished painting that looked like a study was a novelty at the time.
