Ask anything

  • Susanne Hafner asked

Is the mentioned portrait of the wife also part of your collection? Kind regards!

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Hi Susanne, the portrait is not a part of our collection. You can see it here (with a bright red background, not a blue one) at the Van Gogh Museum. https://www.vangoghmuseum.nl/nl/collectie/s0493S1999
    Best, Lisa

  • What do you see?

Van Dongen painted many portraits. His portrait of his wife hangs above the buffet in this interior, with its marvellous colours and composition. In the actual portrait she stands against a bright red background. Here it has become blue. Apparently he did not find the red harmonious with the ochre yellow and blue.
