'The Supper at
Emmaus' is the most famous falsification in Dutch art history. In 1937 the
Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen purchased this painting as an extraordinary
Vermeer, right under the nose of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Only after the
Second World War, following a confession by the master forger Han van Meegeren,
was the 'Vermeer' unmasked as a clever fake.
