This flower still life is an early work by the Belgian painter James Ensor. He was fascinated by the way light alters the appearance of objects. Ensor’s early works have a clear connection with Impressionism. In his later works, filled with skeletons and carnivalesque figures, symbolism and fantasy plays a greater part.
