Allebé lacked the self-confidence to blossom fully as an artist and became professor at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. Initially there was criticism of his appointment: ‘Mr Allebé is a young person of great and highly original talent – which comprises a strong and idiosyncratic sentiment for colour […] He finds his forms through the relief of his colour, hesitantly, without contour, without definition, seeking effect without knowing precisely how in advance.’
