Monticelli was primarily a painter of figure pieces and flower still lifes, but his landscapes are also accomplished and quite distinct from those of the Barbizon School and the Impressionists. This tree is more of a vision than an observation of reality. It is possible that Vincent van Gogh was referring to this work when he wrote to his brother Theo in October 1889 about ‘a fine landscape by Monticelli’ they had seen together in a gallery in Paris ‘of a tree on some rocks against a sunset.’
