Ask anything

  • Lin Vivian Barton asked

I'd like to know more about this painting, Dead Swan by Floris Verster.

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Hi Lin, how wonderfull that you'd like to know more about this painting! But what information are you exactly looking for? If you scroll down on the page, you will see the header 'Specifiations', if you click on 'Show all details', you will get all the specifications of this painting. Or maybe this is what you are looking for: the object was part of an exhibition called 'The Collection as Time Machine' until Januari 2019. This was the text that was written for it: "Verster was twenty-five when he made this masterful painting, a modern version of the large hunting still lifes that Jan Weenix painted in the 17th century. Verster was fond of hunting, and in his painting the dead animal is simultaneously majestic and tragic. Some contemporaries had difficulties with the work. One critic wrote ironically that it depicted a swan that had fallen out of a frying pan into a bath of limewash." Hopefully this answers your question. Have a nice day, Sarie.
