More information

This large canvas can actually be classified into two categories. In the first place, it is a river view. It shows the return home of a trading ship near Maasland lock. In the second place, the work could be considered a group portrait. A family is shown in the foreground, somewhat to the left of middle. They are conspicuous because of their colourful, costly clothing. Considering the attention given to fish and ships in the painting, the man is possibly a wealthy fishing-fleet owner from Den Briel.
