Van der Helst's talents as a portrait painter were in great demand. He demonstrates his skill in this double portrait through the realistic depiction of the faces and fabrics. This nuptial portrait was commissioned by the Amsterdam based cloth merchant Abraham del Court. He wears a black satin suit and his wife Maria wears a silvery white French satin dress.
