Monticelli was an artists’ artist. He was a friend of Cézanne, and the much younger Van Gogh was a great admirer. His colleagues must have been fascinated by his experiments with paint, which he preferred thick and unmixed. There is little of that here, although it is certainly an odd work, with that solitary peeled sea urchin standing out so shockingly red amidst all the black.
