The drawers of this cabinet are made from whalebone, which has been pressed in a metal mould. Master cabinetmaker Herman Doomer invented this technique and applied for a patent in 1641. Doomer's exceptional craftsmanship earned him a great reputation in Amsterdam; Rembrandt painted portraits of him and his wife. He is the only craftsman to be portrayed by the famous painter.
