Here Tholen has immortalised his teacher Gabriël at work in a boat with a paint box on his lap. He filters the glare of the direct sunlight through a parasol. Thanks to the invention of the paint tube around 1850, artists were able to carry paint with them without it drying out. This enabled them to work in the open air.
