Willem Bastiaan Tholen

Amsterdam 1860 - Den Haag 1931

Willem Bastiaan Tholen studied at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam. Paul Gabriël, one of The Hague School masters, gave him lessons for some time and had considerable influence on his painting style. Tholen mainly found his inspiration in life on and near the water. He could often be found in the neighbourhood of Giethoorn and by the Zuyder Zee. Tholen is famous for his landscapes, village and town views and, particularly, his waterscapes. He was a master in depicting atmosphere.
