Ask anything

  • Guus van Hoorn asked

Was the intended use of the skech for a ballroom ceiling ever executed?

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Hi Guus, Yes the designs for the Banqueting House in Whitehall were probably commisioned around 1629, executed in Rubens' Antwerp studio and shipped to England. The central theme was the reign of Jacob I, depicted as an new Salomon whose wisdom had brought peace and prosperity. The huge canvases were completed in August 1634. In 1636 they were mounted at the ceiling of Banqueting House, where they still can be admired. In fact this is Rubens' only big commission that is still intact at its original location. Kind regards, Els

  • Katelynn Van Dusseldorp asked

Would there be any possibility that you guys would know the museums that the sketch of the Union of England and Scotland has been in and their timelines? Thank you!

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Dear Katelynn, as far as I can tell from our digital database that would be: Musée de l'Orangerie (1937), Koninklijke Musea voor Schone Kunsten van België (?) [title exhibition: Schetsen van Rubens], Petit Palais - Musée des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Paris (1952), Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum (1983-1984), Louvre Lens (2012), Wuppertal Von der Heydt museum (2012-2013), Prado (2018), Kunsthal Rotterdam (2019), and in the near future the National Gallery in London. Best, Rianne
