More information

The portrait of Franco-Russian communist politician Charles Rappoport is realistic. The sombre palette is enlivened here and there by light accents – on his shirt, the pamphlet in his right hand, his face and shoes. Van Dongen exhibits this painting in 1920 at the Salon d’Automne among four elegant portraits of women. In 1936
museum director Dirk Hannema buys it for Museum Boymans as one of Van Dongen’s most powerful male portraits.
