Guardi had a particular eye for the poetic qualities of the city of Venice and allowed himself greater freedom with the topography than, for example, a similar painter such as Canaletto. His free brush strokes resulted in atmospheric 'vedute', Venetian cityscapes. This veduta, too was turned into an exceptional work by the subtly depicted atmosphere and the light, silver-grey tonality.
