Here Koekkoek probably painted the Neanderthal near Dusseldorf. A century and a half ago, this valley was a rock gorge that has since been robbed of its beauty by chalk excavations. Koekkoek visited the gorge and enthusiastically described it in his book 'Memories and meanderings of a landscape painter', which appeared in 1841. The light of the setting sun falls between two rock formations onto three cows and a number of figures. Peasants rest along the banks of the stream.
