Philippe Rousseau, not to be confused with his namesake, the landscape painter Théodore, was famous for sumptuous, virtuoso still lifes and animal pieces of the ‘cat surprised by a dog’ genre. Today his reputation rests on the few times that he made no concessions to kitsch, as in this still life. That glass, that bulb, the roots in the water: that is more than enough.
