The Norwegian artist Dahl befriended the great romantic landscape painter Caspar David Friedrich while in Dresden. The German artist exerted an enduring influence on him. This beautiful, small painting – a new acquisition – is clearly indebted to Friedrich: a panorama of a mountain landscape at night, under a clouded sky with a full moon, with a solitary figure in the foreground, viewed from behind. The viewer instinctively identifies with the figure.
