The cattle and landscape painter Troyon was extremely successful in his day. His fame has now faded, but he and his colleagues of the School of Barbizon were important links in the development of 19th-century landscape painting. With their liking for 17th-century Dutch landscape art and their practice of painting out of doors they inspired both the Impressionists and the artists of the Hague School.
