Michelangelo Cerquozzi often painted in the so-called Bamboccianti style. This style was named after Il Bamboccio, the nickname of the Dutch painted Pieter van Laer who worked in Rome. He painted typically Dutch genre works in Italian landscapes. Considering Cerquozzi's contacts with Dutch artists such as Van Laer, Dutch influences on the iconography are not unlikely. The theme of plucking fruit, which could be seen as erotic, was already common in the Netherlands in the 16th century., For centuries the pomegranate was a symbol of fertility and abundance, undoubtedly because of the many seeds it contains. The girl looks longingly up at the young man; he has just given her a fruit so ripe it has burst open. It is easy to see why the pomegranate was regarded as an aphrodisiac.
