Reference has often been made to the possible influence Rembrandt's 'Descent from the cross' had on the work of Domenico Tiepolo. From 1738 to 1762, this painting belonged to the collection of Joseph Smith in Venice. Indeed, there is a certain similarity with the work of the Dutch master in the shape of the cross and the contours of the thief on the cross to the right. It is not out of the question that Tiepolo's canvas was one of a series of passion scenes.
