The artist sits on a chair in casual clothing making a drawing of a bust on the table. Hubert Robert was in Rome from 1754 to 1765 and spent the final two years in the house of the Bailiff of Breteuil and French Ambassador to the Order of Malta in Rome. This is a self portrait of the painter at work in this house in Rome.
