The Apostle Judas Thaddeus

Ask anything

  • Jakob Koopman asked

Do you have any other apostels by van Dyck? What has he in his hands? A gridiron?

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Hi Jakob, this is the only painted apostle in the museum collection. However, we do have several prints after Van Dijck's apostles, engraved by for instance a master like Cornelis van Caukercken, like Philippus, Thomas, Bartholomeus, Simon, Mattheus, Matthias and others. Judas Thaddeus (not the Judas who betrayed Christ) was a carpenter and carries a drawing hook with him. I hope this is helpful. Kind regards, Els

More information

Anthonie van Dyck painted two different series of apostle heads. The first when he was working between 1618 and 1620 in Rubens' studio and the second between March and October 1621, when he owned his own studio for a short time. The 'Judas Thaddeus' belongs to the first series that has now been spread out over the world.
