This highly symbolic work is painted with clearly visible brush marks in light sunny colours. It represents various stages of life: old age (men in the foreground), childhood and motherhood mother and daughter on the right), carefree youth (four dancing girls), and left and right the workers. Toorop lived and worked at the time in the fishing village Katwijk.
