More information

Breitner, who was born in Rotterdam, moved to The Hague as a young man. It was the country’s artistic centre. In 1886, though, he settled in Amsterdam, which was livelier. His paintings and photographs of the rapidly changing city are famous. Construction sites made superb subjects. It was thanks to Breitner that their robust beauty became the classic image of 19th-century Amsterdam.
