Portrait of a boy, standing next to a table with folios and a globe

Johannes Vollevens (II) (in 1730-1740)

Ask anything

  • Emma Creamer asked

This is odd, but does Johannes Vollevens (II) sign his paintings in the lower left corner "J Vollevens de long"? Also, do you have paperwork about a Vollevens painting that was deaccesioned/lost in the early 1900s?

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Hi Emma, Thanks for your question. I have asked Ruben Suykerbuyk, our curator of old art, and he says that in our records, the signature is registered as located at the bottom right, "J Vollevens." Ruben will verify this on Thursday and he will let me know if it appears to be different.
In any case, we have no documentation about another painting by Vollevens that has ever been lost - but of course, if you have any information suggesting otherwise, please let us know.
    Kind regards, Els
