De Wit of Amsterdam was the only Dutch artist who could decorate the homes of the rich and trendy in the latest Rococo fashion. He transformed ceilings into gateways to the heavens in which gods and virtues disport themselves gracefully. His oil sketches for such projects are often more attractive than the finished works, because there is nothing to distract from the elegant flourishes.
