Many of Verheijen’s scenes of Utrecht depict notable buildings, such as Saint Martin’s Cathedral: they are the forerunners of picture postcards. As far as we know, this view under a bridge does not represent any specific location but is more an impression of the city, enlivened by a maid and a fisherman going about their work. The white light gives the scene a southern tint, as in Italian landscapes by Utrecht’s painters of the 17th century.
