In 1663 Pieter Saenredam made the large painting of the Saint Mary’s Church in Utrecht that is displayed in gallery 30. Two centuries later, Jan Weissenbruch painted the same church, but not from reality, as you might expect. The imposing Romanesque building was demolished in the first half of the 19th century to make way for the Neoclassical Building of Arts and Sciences, which still stand there today. Weissenbruch’s painting is therefore a reconstruction, a souvenir.
