More information

Henry Scheffer (born Hendrik) was the younger brother of the celebrated painter Ary Scheffer. Born in Dordrecht and The Hague respectively, both brothers lived most of their lives in Paris and produced works in the same genres: portraits, religious and historical tableaux and scenes from Romantic literature. This is an excellent example of Henry’s style: a little sentimental perhaps, with the young father kneeling to kiss his wife’s hands following the birth of their first child, but not bad for a painter of twenty.
