Pieneman was a celebrated portrait painter in the Netherlands in the first half of the 19th century. He also had an elegant appearance. Here he has depicted himself in his early twenties as a charming dandy and virtuoso painter. An example of his portraiture is in the background, a copy of 'The Penitent Magdalene' by Cerezo de Jonge.
