Nicolaas Pieneman

Amersfoort 1809 - Amsterdam 1860

Nicolaas Pieneman was the son of the painter Jan Willem Pieneman. His father gave him some basic training before he went to study at the Academy in Amsterdam. He primarily painted portraits, but also produced historical pieces with scenes from Dutch history. Pieneman made a number of portraits and historical pieces for the Royal family. Pieneman's daughter Johanna would follow in her father's footsteps as painter.
