Achilles, who tried to escape the Trojan war by dressing as a woman, was unmasked when he instinctively chose the sword from the gifts laid out before him. History painters had to compress tales into a single image. Van Limborgh opted for absolute clarity of composition, pose and colour. Dutch art, which had long ignored the international fashion for Classicism, was beautifully back in step around 1700.
