For 19th-century painters, the landscapes of the 17th century represented a benchmark that was difficult to ignore. In this painting by the prematurely deceased Kobell, the entire scene - with cattle, trees and a farmhouse - is familiar to us from earlier examples, but the mother-of-pearl sky visible between and above the trees gives the landscape a transparency that is typical of the early 19th century.
