Decorative motifs on tiles were first drawn on paper. The lines of the drawing were then pricked at regular intervals with a pin and the motif was stencilled through the holes onto the tile with charcoal to provide a rough guide for the painter. A single stencil could be used by several painters, each of whom elaborated on the basic design.
