This 'Grand Tour' portrait was commissioned in Rome by the Rotterdam-based tobacco merchant Pieter Caarten at the age of thirty-seven. The idea for such a portrait may have been inspired by his business contacts in England, which supplied the majority of Batoni’s clientele.
