Ask anything

  • Camilla asked

    Hello,
I have read several places that the background in Makart's Abundantia was painted with gold paint. I was hoping I could read a little more about it here, but unfortunately not. Is it something you can confirm? And do you what what type os gold paint is used? I'm mostly interested to know whether it's gold or gold-bronze.
    Thanks in advance.
    Best,
    Camilla

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Hi Camilla, Hans Makart painted this image with oil paint and although the background suggests that it is gilded, it is also painted. Unfortunately we have no information about the specific paint he used, nor about his studio practice. I notices there is an extensive catalogue raissoné, maybe you can find more information in it: https://www.belvedere.at/en/product/2121
    Kind regards, Els
