In 1884 Van Gogh made a series of paintings and drawings of weavers at work in Nuenen in Brabant. The socially committed artist has depicted them as tragic figures, imprisoned behind their giant machines and doomed to carry out soul destroying work. The sombre colours underline Van Gogh's sympathy with their lot.
