More information

This portrait was in all probability commissioned by Arie Berendes, a smith living in The Hague. He had asked the up and coming artist Matthijs Maris to produce portraits of him and his wife. In 1916, a year before his death, Matthijs Maris wrote to H.S.J. Maas, the Dutch consul in London: ‘... at that time a Dutchman lived in The Hague by the name of Barends, who played the oboe in the French Opera, and he must have asked me to commit his mug to canvas...’ The portrait of the smith has not been traced, but the portrait of his wife gives us a peek into the first steps in a long and remarkable painting career.
The work must date from the years between 1852 and 1855. Johanna Martina Berendes-Schmidt was born in 1793 in The Hague. She died there in 1868.
