During his stay in Paris, Maris became a pupil of Ernest Hébert, who enjoyed considerable success with genre works. In these, he depicted life in the Roman ‘campagna’ and gave them titles such as ‘The girls of Alvito’ or ‘Rosa Nera at the fountain’. Jacob Maris started painting ‘Italian-like’ on commission from the Parisian art dealer Goupil; the works were given titles such as ‘Italian girl at a spring’, ‘Italian girl on a terrace’ or ‘Two Italian girls in a corn field’.
This small oil sketch appears to be a preliminary sketch for a larger painting which hung in the Municipal Museum in The Hague between 1931 and 1971. This work was exhibited at the Maris exhibition in 1935 under the title ‘Young woman in Neapolitan costume’; the final version is dated 1866. The sketch must be from around the same year.
