Adolphe Hervier travelled throughout France in search of themes for his paintings, drawings and prints. Annual markets, harbour scenes in Normandy seaside places and boats alternate in his work with tranquil landscapes in the vicinity of Barbizon. The place where the stone quarry depicted here was located is unknown. The large hoisting installation is a remarkable element in the woody landscape that largely owes its attractiveness to the effects of light and shadow.
